Lily Nelson, of Bel Air, MD, always dreamed of going to an overnight camp where she could feel independent. For graduation, rather than asking for money or gifts, she asked her family to contribute to her ABLE account so she could make her dreams a reality. That summer at Easterseals Camp Fairlee, she sang her heart out in karaoke, participated in a scavenger hunt, and relaxed in an accessible pool.
“We were really not comfortable sending our daughter to an overnight camp. However, from the minute we pulled up at Camp Fairlee, the counselors were friendly and welcoming. They made us feel comfortable,” Kelly Nelson says. “The ABLE account is so important. It helps people with disabilities to have money to save up for things that are important to them, like going to camp.”
Camp Fairlee’s summer sessions are available for both children and adults of varying disabilities, including specialized sessions for those with autism. While Lily experiences independence and adventure in a supportive environment, her parents receive the break they need from caregiving. They are also able to dive into their older sons’ interests, like going to museums.
With an ABLE account, people with disabilities and their families can save for qualified disability expenses without losing their eligibility for certain assistance programs, like SSI and Medicaid.
“We are so grateful for an ABLE account. We don’t ever want to be in a situation where her benefits are jeopardized. Camp is an investment. ABLE is helpful for that,” Kelly says. “People with disabilities can live with greater independence. They can save for their goals. The money in the account can be used to support health, independence, and quality of life. Camp Fairlee hits all of them!”
