Easterseals Camp Fairlee announced it has secured $500,000 in state funding to support the expansion of its dining hall, made possible through the advocacy and leadership of the Maryland District 36 delegation—Sen. Steve Hershey (Upper Shore) and Delegates Jay Jacobs (Kent), Steve Arentz (Queen Anne’s), and Jeff Ghrist (Caroline)—during the 2026 General Assembly session. This critical project will improve accessibility, reduce overcrowding, and create a more sensory-friendly environment for children and adults with disabilities at the camp.
Operated by Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Camp Fairlee provides an inclusive, sensory-friendly experience for individuals with a wide range of disabilities, including many with autism, while offering vital respite for family caregivers. It is the only camp in the region equipped to provide intensive support for individuals with significant physical and/or behavioral needs—ensuring an accessible camp experience for all.
Last year, Camp Fairlee served more than 450 campers, nearly 60% of whom were Maryland residents. Forty-six campers from Maryland’s District 36 attended Camp Fairlee last year, underscoring the program’s strong local impact.
The dining hall expansion comes in response to growing demand. During the most recent camp season, the existing dining space experienced significant overcrowding. Elevated noise levels and overstimulation have also contributed to increased sensory-related challenges, particularly for campers with autism.
“For many of the individuals and families we serve, Camp Fairlee is more than just a camp—it’s a place of belonging, growth, and independence,” President/CEO of Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Ken Sklenar, said. “This expansion ensures we can continue to provide that experience safely and effectively as demand grows.”
Delegate Jay Jacobs added, “Camp Fairlee is an invaluable resource for families across our region. This funding will ensure that campers have a safe, accessible, and welcoming space to gather and connect. I’m proud to support an organization that makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of so many.”
Senator Steve Hershey said, “The expansion of Camp Fairlee’s dining hall is a smart and necessary investment in our community. By addressing overcrowding and improving accommodations for individuals with sensory sensitivities, we are helping ensure that every camper has the opportunity to fully participate and thrive.”
Easterseals expressed deep appreciation for the District 36 delegation’s continued support, as well as prior Bond Bill funding that enabled important enhancements to the camp’s accessible aquatics program.
