Easterseals Supported Employment Program Finds Dream Jobs

When Briana, of Dover, DE, graduated from college, she dreamed of inspiring the next generation by becoming a teacher. Thanks to the Easterseals Supported Employment program, Briana's passion is now her career as she teaches little Spartans at the Delaware Early Childhood Center (DECC). 

“I love working here; everyone is so nice and welcoming. It is the best job I’ve ever had,” Briana says. “I love having my own money to spend on Amazon shopping, buying food, eating out, concerts, and vacations.”

Briana, who has an intellectual disability, works as an Assistant Teacher with three- and four-year-olds, working closely with the lead teacher. She is growing in her role by taking greater initiative in the classroom, including contributing ideas for activities and assuming more responsibility for classroom cleaning. 

“Briana is a valued member of our Little Spartans team. She brings positive energy to our program and genuinely cares for both the children and her colleagues,” Administrator of DECC programs, Brandi Short, says. “Briana greets everyone with a smile and has a special way of remembering the little details that make people feel seen, welcomed, and appreciated. Her warmth, thoughtfulness, and positive attitude make a meaningful difference here at DECC.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 22.8 percent of people with a disability were employed in 2025, and the jobless rate for those with a disability was 8.3 percent, about double the 4.1 percent rate for those without a disability. Many people with disabilities want to work but continue to face hurdles like inaccessible application technology, hiring bias, and difficulty requesting reasonable workplace accommodations.

“Briana brings enthusiastic energy to her classroom each day. She is excited about the new school year,” Easterseals Employment Specialist, Jaclyn Deldeo-Tolbert, says. “She takes direction and constructive feedback well. She is consistently willing to learn and improve in her role. Her passion for working with young children is evident in the way she interacts with her students.” 

Easterseals can help businesses hire workers with disabilities through either Individual or Group Supported Employment Services. With the help of Easterseals Employment Specialists, workers with disabilities are matched with jobs in local businesses. Employment Specialists provide ongoing, individualized training and coaching to ensure long-term job success. In group-supported employment, small groups of participants work with on-site support and supervision from Easterseals staff.
